Security Deposit Requirements
Most car rental companies in Malta require a security deposit, unless you’ve added full coverage insurance, which can reduce or even remove the deposit requirement.
💰 Typical Deposit Amounts
- Standard/compact vehicles: usually €500–€1,000
- Larger/luxury vehicles: typically €1,000+
- The deposit amount often equals the insurance excess
- Varies by vehicle type and rental company
How It Works
The deposit is pre-authorized (blocked) on your card at pick-up. No funds are withdrawn unless there are damages or violations.
Refund Timeline
Deposits are released within 7–30 days after your rental ends, depending on your bank and the rental company’s processing time.
Credit/Debit Cards for Deposits
A credit card in the main driver’s name is commonly required for the deposit. Some providers accept debit cards for deposits—use our filters to find “no credit card required” options when available.
Cash Deposits
Some companies accept cash deposits, but a valid card may still be required as a guarantee. Bank charges for refunds may apply.
Accepted Payment Methods
Malta car rental companies accept the following payment options:
Credit Cards
Visa and MasterCard are widely accepted for both rental payment and security deposits.
Must be in the main driver’s name
Debit Cards
Generally accepted for rental payment. Some providers also accept debit cards for the deposit—check each offer and use our filters to find no-credit-card options.
Visa and MasterCard debit cards
Not Accepted
American Express, Diners Club, prepaid cards, and virtual cards are generally not accepted.
